Jack C. Lane '06H Professor Emeritus

Jack Lane

In 1951 Jack Lane was drafted to fight in the Korean War at the age of 19. The Veterans Administration offered Jack a life insurance policy with a face value of $10,000. Jack accepted this life insurance policy knowing that it would help his mother should he not return from the War.

After the Korean War, Jack came to Rollins in 1963 to work as a professor in the History Department. At that time, many faculty in the History Department were older and would be required to retire at the age of 65. Before long, Jack as the senior professor became the department chair. As department chair, he was determined to rebuild the History Department into a highly respected academic unit. Jack was successful in this endeavor, and after ten years he turned the department chair over to his successor. Jack remains extremely proud of the Rollins History Department.

Over time, the value of the insurance policy increased. As Jack approached retirement, he did not know if he and his wife Janne would have enough income from their assets to maintain their lifestyle. However, Jack discovered that they had more than enough assets to support them in retirement. Jack and Janne are very proud that their children are self-sufficient and as such will not need the life insurance proceeds after Jack passes. With Janne's consent and support, Jack will create the Jack Lane History Award Fund with the life insurance policy benefit. This award will be given to future exceptional history students.
